Above all, it stamps its character on the marvellous architecture that held pride of place among the arts during the Middle Ages. It brands its mark on cathedrals’ brows; it frames its hells and purgatories in ogive doorways, and sets them burning in stained glass windows; it unleashes its demons and monsters around capitals, along friezes, on eaves. It sprawls in countless shapes on the wooden façades of the houses, the stone façades of castles, the marble façades of palaces. From art it moves to lifestyle; while it offers comic graciosos for the people to applaud, it also supplies kings with court jesters.

It pervades their whole thinking; it generates deformity and horror on one side, comedy and clowning on the other. It surrounds religion with thousands of original superstitions, poetry with countless picturesque fantasies. * Sometimes it casts into Christendom’s hell the hideous figures conjured up by the austere genius of Dante and Milton, sometimes the absurd creatures among which Callot, that burlesque Michelangelo, finds amusement. When it turns from the ideal world to the real one, it unleashes countless parodies of human foibles.

Readers don’t generally pay much attention to such things. They are more interested in a writer’s talent than his opinions; and whether a work is good or bad, they don’t particularly care about the ideas behind it or the attitude that moulded it. When you walk through the rooms of a building, you seldom visit its cellars; when you eat the fruit of a tree, you don’t give much thought to its roots. Besides, notes and prefaces are sometimes an easy way to increase the weight of a book and enhance (at least in appearance) its importance.
