When I was living with Grandma Carrie she had shown me the welfare check. It was for ninety-four dollars. She said it was plenty for us to make it along with her Social Security. I figured that Lonnie must have got ninety-four dollars, too. I looked to see how much food he had bought, and it wasn’t too much, so I put the five dollars in my room in a pair of rolled-up socks in case he ran out of money. Then I took some Twinkies he had bought and went down to the stoop. I liked sitting on the stoop a lot.

A few guys was sitting around but there really wasn’t nothing to do. I started feeling bad. ” Grandma Carrie used to say. I used to try to imagine being a dying calf in a thunderstorm and I couldn’t, but I knew it must have felt bad. 56 After that me and Lonnie didn’t have a whole lot to say to each other. He still walked around acting like he was mad at me all the time, but I didn’t even care. He always left some money around for food, though. I went to see Grandma Carrie again. I asked one of the nurses to tell her I was downstairs, like I always did.

Lonnie leaned back against the table and crossed his legs. 52 “The stuff that was on the table before,” I asked. My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my neck. ” “No reason,” I said. I didn’t even know I was going to ask about it. ” Lonnie came over to where I was still trying to get the teapot filled with water. He stood right next to me so his arm was touching mine. Then he leaned over and talked real soft in my ear. ” “I don’t know,” I said. I was so scared I forgot the question.
